  • Based on 2025 BC commercial driver's licence manual
  • Updated for April 2025
To upgrade to a British Columbia Class 3 commercial driver’s licence, you must be at least 18 years old, pass a vision test, and disclose any medical conditions that might impair safe driving. In addition, you must have held a full-privilege British Columbia Class 5 or 6 licence with fewer than four penalty-point incidents for the past two years. Our ICBC Class 3 Practice Test is here to help!

You must pass an official road signs test and a British Columbia Class 3 knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 3 vehicles. You must score at least 80% on each test to pass. Passing these tests enables you to obtain a Class 3 learner’s licence, allowing you to practice commercial driving under supervision. Your driving supervisor must be at least 19 years old and hold a Class 3 licence. Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not required for a Class 3 licence.

Most Class 3 vehicles in British Columbia have air brakes. You must have an Air Brake endorsement to legally drive such vehicles. To get started, complete a certified Air Brake course and pass the official Air Brake knowledge test.

The standard reference for all commercial knowledge tests is the ICBC handbook Driving Commercial Vehicles.

When you feel ready, you may take the road test for a Class 3 licence. The road test will include a pre-trip inspection test. You must take these tests in a Class 3 vehicle. If you’re also applying for an Air Brake endorsement, the test vehicle must have air brakes, and the road test will also include a pre-trip inspection test of the air brake system.

Once you pass, you’ll be issued a temporary Class 3 licence. Ask your doctor to complete a Driver’s Medical Examination Report form and send it to RoadSafety BC. They will decide whether you’re medically fit to drive Class 3 vehicles.

If you want more intensive study to ensure you pass the Class 3 knowledge exam on your first try, we’ve got what you’re looking for!

This is the first of our seven British Columbia Class 3 practice tests. It covers the basics of operating Class 3 vehicles. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, discuss the question in more depth, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
